With the support of the Board of Governors and local community, we have embedded an Ulster-Scots based thematic approach in our day-to-day teaching and learning. This helps us to achieve our statutory obligation to meet the needs of our children in keeping with their culture and values.
Here are some of the ways in which we have done this:
* By appointing an Ulster-Scots Curriculum Co-Ordinator (currently Dr. Harper).
* Incorporating aspects of Ulster-Scots language, culture and history in our World Around Us topics such as Farming, the Linen Industry in Ulster, and Space.
* Providing Highland dancing classes for all children and Fiddle lessons (P4-7).
* Pioneering and participating in projects with other schools (for example, in the Land of Promise project, we linked with Culcrow Primary school, the Buick Memorial Primary School, and the Maine Ulster-Scots Project in America to visit an archaeological site via zoom and talk with the descendants of the McFadden family who left Ulster in the 1700s (you can find out more on the CCEA website as a case study).
* Through our Literacy programme- for example;
- Storytelling and drama work, alongside singing in Ulster-Scots and learning nursery rhymes for Nursery Rhyme week.
- Identifying and adding Ulster-Scots words we use all the time to our school word wall.
- Through drama productions such as "Kissing the Shuttle"- a story about the workers in the linen mill in Belfast, performed by our pupils.
- Using CCEA and Discover Ulster-Scots online resources to support learning across the curriculum.
- Culture Club P4-7 is an opportunity for children to play games, have fun and expand their learning in all things Ulster-Scots.
